Object description:

Picture: Lauenstein Castle

The oldest sections of this hill-top castle originate from the 12th century. The main wing, built by the knights of Thüna in 1551-1554, is a remarkable example of central German Renaissance architecture. In 1896 the neglected building was privately restored in the late Historicist style by Dr. Erhard Meßmer, who also refurnished the interior.

After 1962 the Bavarian Administration of State-owned Palaces renovated the castle and opened it as a museum.
